Legendary Stories

There was a time when “good book” and “good story” meant the same thing. Great characters and plots combined to create stories that are still published and read and re-read and adapted today. Such books—Tarzan of the Apes, Dracula, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, The Last of the Mohicans, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes—captured the public’s imagination on their release, stole their readers’ collective breath with their fast-paced adventure and twisting mysteries, and created legends.

Legendary Planet wants to bring those iconic stories and that storytelling to today.

Legendary Planet publishes new editions of the great books that represent the beginnings of modern adventure fiction, the stories and characters that are the roots of everything from James Bond to Superman to Star Trek to the 2012 movie smash, The Avengers. We are also proud to present new fiction, from bright new writers, that hearkens back to those foundational stories with more contemporary sensibilities.

What’s a Picture Worth?

We think great cover art is an absolutely essential part of the experience in reading and getting to know a book. Countless reading adventures began with a glimpse of the works of Frazetta, Wyeth, Pyle, or Whelan, so Legendary Planet titles all feature stunning cover art, both original and restored from vintage (and in some cases, vintage interior art as well), and also other digital media as available. You can see a selection of Legendary Planet covers here.

The Greatest of the Past...

Featuring thoughtful introductions explaining the story’s historical and literary significance, our first two classic re-releases are books that each changed popular and adventure fiction upon their release a century ago: A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Fantômas by Marcel Allain & Pierre Souvestre. We’ll follow those with more works from the likes of E.E. “Doc” Smith, Sax Rohmer, Alexander Dumas, and a score of others as we reach back into literature for the stories that inspired readers and writers and changed the world. Like looking through old family photos, it’s always fascinating, if not thrilling, to read these stories and see where and how it all started.

...and Today.

Legendary Planet’s line of new fiction, from bright new writers, hearkens back to those foundational stories with more contemporary sensibilities, featuring both all-original titles and novels continuing the adventures of some of the great old series.
